Commission weighs creation of national Hispanic museum

Gaining public support and funding for a national museum to showcase the culture and contributions of Hispanics in the United States might prove difficult in tough economic times, but there's never been a greater need for such an institution, South Floridians told a federal commission visiting Miami Wednesday.


The 23-member commission, created in 2008, is studying whether it would be desirable to create a national museum dedicated to the history, heritage and contributions of Hispanics in the United States. ``Culture matters,'' said journalist Helen Aguirre Ferré, speaking in favor of the creation of the National Museum of the American Latino.
``It builds bridges, helps explain.''


On many people's minds was a rash of recent events perceived as evidence of growing resentment against Hispanics in the United States: Anti-Hispanic remarks made by political candidates and politicians.
