World War II was a turning point for the United States, and the war had an impact on U.S. Latinos just as much as other groups.
It has been estimated that anywhere from 250,000 to as many as 750,000 Latinos and Latinas served in the armed forces during World War II.
After the war, more Latinos, including veterans, took active political roles to press for crucial improvements. WWII veteran Joe Bernal, whose story is featured in the exhibit, served first in the Texas House and later in the Texas Senate. Bernal was the primary author of a bill that expunged state statues supporting racial segregation and of another that created the University of Texas at San Antonio in 1969. READ FULL STORY
