Gutierrez tired of being a target

Jesse Gutierrez is proud of his accomplishments in his 11 years as the executive director of Nevada Hispanic Services, especially the founding of the Mariposa Academy of Language and Learning charter school, which has been a lifeline for many children in poorer neighborhoods. But he is also a bit tired of being Reno's lightning rod for everything Hispanic. That fatigue is one of the reasons he retired recently, ending a successful but sometimes controversial run as the leader of the largest nonprofit agency helping Washoe County and Carson City's Hispanic populations. Nevada Hispanic Services is the only nonprofit of its kind, offering an umbrella of services, education, advice and referrals to the many Hispanic families trying to get by or get ahead in Northern Nevada.
